Together Project is seeking volunteers, over the age of 18, to work with newcomer refugee claimants in the Greater Toronto Area. We match "Welcome Groups" of five or more volunteers with vulnerable newcomer households for social support and assistance with settlement.
We are currently working to match “Welcome Groups” with refugee claimants who are individuals claiming protection in Canada. We are matching volunteers with three categories of refugee claimants:
● Youth aged 18-25
● Single parent families
● Families of four or more
Over 6 months, volunteers will work to address specific priorities identified by their matched household though which both newcomers and volunteers will also have an opportunity to get to know each other. Common areas of support include:
● practicing conversational English skills
● navigating services, like healthcare
● finding extracurricular activities for youth
● socializing and learning about Canada
Together Project provides training, guidance, and interpretation and translation assistance to help each Welcome Group maximize its impact. We ask volunteers to take part in training workshops and review training materials provided by Together Project that concern how to effectively volunteer with vulnerable newcomers, e.g. trauma-informed care, accessing services, etc.
Your individual time commitment is flexible, as the responsibility is shared among group members and volunteers can take turns visiting according to their availability. We recommend a weekly interaction between Welcome Groups and matched newcomer families, which means that most volunteers dedicate 3-4 hours a month to their match.
Given the responsibility of working closely with a vulnerable household, we’re looking for applicants who are organized, sociable, and committed to helping welcome newcomers to their community.
